Once given our site, the first thing I noticed was the orientation. We had a northern view of a local park, with nothing blocking direct light in the North to East direction. This meant that I could gain a lot of natural lighting to these sides of my house.
As much of a positive it is to have views to a park, it also means that people in the park can view into the house if not designed carefully.
The winds that affected this site were to be taken seriously as the site was in a fairly open space. I drew basic diagrams showing the wind directions and this helped me in determining the sides of the house to expose to the elements and the sides not to.
The sun was another important factor that needed to be considered. I drew out the sun directions and with the help of this Sun/Wind chart I was able to work out where I was going to allow and disallow sun into my cabin. Early morning winter sun was beneficial, whereas early morning and late afternoon summer sun were detrimental. This instantly made it easy for me to work out the orientation of my cabin.
